Rag Season

On my first day at university I arrived with a fear of ragging. The first three months are called "rag season" and new students are subjected to different jokes and pranks:
--they must wear normal frocks, rubber slippers and are not allowed other decorations;
--they can't use English words when talking to seniors;
--they can't laugh with seniors even if they make jokes;
--they are set impossible tasks but mustn't laugh when doing them (stopping planes by shouting at them, measuring long walls by using tiny sticks, moving fans by blowing at them)

My Mountain

Although I am working in Colombo, my home is in Badulla in the centre of the country. We live on a tea estate.
My friends in Colombo like to visit our place and whenever friends or relations visit our place we make them climb Narangula mountain. Climbing this mountain is difficult, but at the end you forget all the difficulties and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
I have climbed the moutain more then ten times but have still not given up. Climbing this mountain has become a hobby of mine.

REX

I am going to tell you about one of the sorrowful moments in my life.
In August my dog passed away. I loved him like nothing else and he loved me back. He was so joyful.
He chased after cats and he really went nuts when he saw one.He loved eating meat and drank lots of milk.
Every morning he had a large bowl of milk and bread. He used to sleep in my room and came with me everywhere. He loved to hang out with me.
When I came back from school he used to run towards me and start licking me and jumping up and down.
I am still deeply missing him. I hope he'll come back to us again. But it is just a long lead to an endless wait!

An Unforgettable Journey to Adam's Peak

It was a Friday in the middle of January and we decided to go on a trip to Sri Pada. There were 23 of us altogether. We reached the mountain at 8.30pm and started our journey at night.
Sri Padhaya is a sacred mountain a 2,243m high which Buddhists believe has the Lord Buddha's footprint. Many religions also come here to worship.
It's not an easy task to climb the mountain and there are many hardships on the way to the top. The pilgrims sing and eat a special food called "Aggala".
There is a special tradition associated with this place. All the pilgrims must wash their faces in the cold waters of the "Seetha Gangula" and some even bathe. New visitors are called "Kirikodu" and others are called "Dadukodu". Kirikodus must wrap a cleaned coin with a piece of white cloth and hang it at a special place dedicated to God.
After a walk of 6 hours we arrived at the top. The scred place has four pillars. Most people stay at the top to see the sun rise at just after 6.00am. It's fantastic scenery and we were lucky to see it. Then we started the climb down which also took 6hours.
I will never forget this mountain tour.

Thank God!

It was a dark and rainy night. I was alone in the house so I went to bed early. While I was sleeping I got a phone call. Someone was threatening to kidnap me that night. I tried phoning the police, but the line was disconnected. I tried getting a rickshaw, but there weren't any.
I decided to run to the police station. I ran fast and got very wet. I saw five men chasing with guns pointing at me. I was very scared.
I ran and ran and ran. After a few minutes I came to the top of a mountain.
There was nowhere to hide or run. I could only go back or jump off.
If I went back the goons would shoot me. So I screamed and then jumped and then rolled and rolled and rolled.
Thank God! I was alive and safe, because when I awoke I was under the bed.

The Last Match I Played

One day my friends told me that they had arranged a cricket match at Wadduwa ground and asked me to come along.
I arrived there in the morning and was surprised to see more than 40 boys in the ground. My friends hadn't expected so many to turn up.
We decided to play a match but we faced the problem about how many teams to create. Some said we should create 4 teams, some said we should create 5.
We decided to create 2 teams because all the boys had come to play and not to watch. So there were 22 players in each side.
There were a few sixes scored but it was very difficult to score runs because there were fielders all over the ground. We played 5 8-over matches. Even though the other team won 3-2 we enjoyed playing it very much.

Phone Call

There was a rich businessman called Somadasa who had a busy life. One day he got a call from his office telling him that he had to attend a meeting immediately. He took a quick bath and began to iron his shirt. While he was ironing his shirt the phone rang. He picked up the phone straight away and then screamed loudly and fell down......He hadn't answered the phone he had ironed his ear!
